Untouched Scenery for an Untouchable Game of Golf

Once a private hunting and fishing reserve, the course at Swansea to this day retains its natural and untouched beauty. This championship par-72 course offers over 6900 yards of the most immaculate greens and fairways one can find in Southern New England.

Swansea Country Club has a superb layout, courtesy of designer Geoffrey Cornish, that is an easy walk and even easier on the eyes.

With its beautiful tree lines that hug every hole and the majestic Palmer River that caresses the entire course, it is sometimes hard to tell which is more enjoyable, the game or the view.

As you travel the course, every hole offers a new and different challenge. With four different tee settings, every level of golfer can enjoy Swansea.

For the first hole, accuracy pays dividends both off the tee and around the green. Playing the right side of the fairway will give you the best approach to the hole. Shoot for the middle of the green regardless of pin placement.

Moving on to hole No. 2. Considered the best par 5 of the course, there is less trouble up the right side with better approach to the green. Play your second shot to set up the best personal distance for your approach. Birdie is certainly an opportunity on this hole.

Accuracy is crucial when dealing with the third hole to avoid a big score. Many play to arrive in three to avoid trouble. If you end up with par then you've played it just fine.

The fourth hole is a long but straightforward hole. Stay below the pin or short for your best chance at par.

The best drive is 210-225 yards down the middle. The water and trees that line this hole are beautiful but may make for a tricky play. Go long or right and you get wet, go short and you could get blocked by the trees. The green is heavily sloped from the back to the front.

Wind is often a bigger factor above the tree line than is apparent from the tee of hole 6. Avoid any downhill or side hill putts if you can.

The left side trees are closer than they appear. The green is hourglass shaped, very narrow, and highly sloped. Par is a good score.

Hole No. 8 is often down wind and reachable in two for longer hitters. Drive up the right side for the best approach.

”Hole No. 9 is considered the meat of our course,” says Robb Martin, course manager. It is a long uphill finishing hole. A right to left shaped shot works very well. The green slopes from back right to front left and approach shots bounce left. Stay below the hole.

The tenth hole is a relatively easy starting hole. The accurate shooter will beat the long hitter almost every time.

Hole No. 11 is middle iron par 3 for many players. Wind can be a factor from the tee. The green is further from the front bunker than it appears.

Considered to be a relatively open par 4 by most players. However, hole No. 12 can be a difficult to make par off the right, left or back of green.

Hole No. 13 is a very long par 5 that is at least a 3 shot hole for even the longest hitters. The majestic oaks that ride the left side of the hole are closer than they appear from the tee.

A long hitter can find the 14th hole a drivable par 4. Back to front sloping of the green requires getting close to the pin for a good birdie opportunity.

With tall trees surrounding the backside and water in front of the green, hole No. 15 can be a long and difficult par 3. It is best to bounce the ball in with a right to left shaped shot. Par is always a good score here.

On to the 16th. This is a difficult 90-degree dogleg right that requires a 180-yard tee shot (from the white markers) from left to right and/or cutting the corner.

Hole No. 17 is a shorter hole that may be reachable in two for long hitters. You can reduce the yardage by playing up the right side.  A birdie score is a possibility.

”A great finish to a magnificent course,” says Martin about the 18th and final hole. It is a great uphill finishing hole worthy of its handicap rating. A right to left tee shot pays dividends. The green slopes more than what is apparent. Bogie is not a bad score.
